Beer Review – Keegan Ales Hurricane Kitty

On a recent trip to NY, I ventured out to find a local beer to bring back to the fellow Dancers. Without any research, I picked up two sixes from Keegan Ales of Kingston, NY. The first was the Hurricane Kitty. From the Keegan Ales site:

“This brew is a coppery and heavily hopped India Pale Ale. Named after brewmaster Keegan’s grandmother whose driving earned her quite a reputation with local police racing her six children to and from a local Long Island beach ferry during the 1960′s, Hurricane Kitty is the undisputed family favorite. We try to make the hop bill read as aggressively as her driver’s record.

I found the Hurricane Kitty to have the following characteristics:

  • Appearance: Deep red, almost too dark for an IPA.
  • Aroma: Caramel, nut and citrus with a whole lot of hops.
  • Taste: Not like an IPA, heavier, fuller flavored with a stout like texture and a hoppy finish.
  • ABV: 5.5%

Labeled an India Pale Ale, I found the aroma and taste to be almost too hoppy, as if they were trying to use hops to mask the other flavors of the beer. This beer was okay, not good, not great, just okay.

  1. You were in my neck of the woods (I live 45 mins away from Kingston in Newburgh, and work 10 minutes away in Rhinebeck). I just finally was able to try their “Mother’s Milk” stout (review coming soon) – if you’re ever in the area again, hit me up, we’ll go do some beer tastings!
